This is pretty much the same as all the other ones--crime, family, money。 What will the man do when he does crime??? To his family??? For money???? A real page turner。 And boy were there a lot of pages!!!! Also, "Grushenka," do we think this is a hot name? 3。5 stars。 After reading several books the past few months that either referenced, quoted, or named this book as a favorite, I knew I had to prioritize it on my to-read list—so I chose this as my first book of the new year。 This is the story of 3 brothers (Alexei, Ivan, and Dmitri) who each approach the world from a different perspective。 To start, this book took some work, and not just because of the length (almost 900 pages)。 The Russian names were difficult, especially because some characters 3。5 stars。 After reading several books the past few months that either referenced, quoted, or named this book as a favorite, I knew I had to prioritize it on my to-read list—so I chose this as my first book of the new year。 This is the story of 3 brothers (Alexei, Ivan, and Dmitri) who each approach the world from a different perspective。 To start, this book took some work, and not just because of the length (almost 900 pages)。 The Russian names were difficult, especially because some characters had several (like 4-5) nicknames。 Additionally, while it’s a murder mystery in plot, at the heart it's a dense work of philosophy。 This is an important element I wish I’d been aware of so I wouldn’t have been frustrated with the pacing。 The plot and relationships move the story along, but there are a lot of slowdowns for conversations and speeches relating to the human condition, the existence of God, truth, and morality。 Instead of seeing these as hurdles keeping me from the plot, I wish I would’ve recognized sooner that those were the point of the book。 With that said, this book is deep, smart, and moving and I know I would continue to get more out of it with subsequent readings。 Below are a few of the gems that stood out to me, but I know there are many more。**In summary, for anyone reading this for the first time I would recommend familiarizing yourself with all the main characters names and nicknames to help you stay oriented; and remember that the plot is a backdrop for his dissertation on God and human nature。 Favorite quotes:-“Why count the days when even one day is enough for a man to know all happiness。 My dears, why do we quarrel, boast before each other, remember each other’s offenses? Let us go to the garden, let us walk and play and love and praise and kiss each other, and bless our life。”-"Very different is the monastic way。 Obedience, fasting, and prayer are laughed at, yet they alone constitute the way to real and true freedom: I cut away my superfluous and unnecessary needs, through obedience I humble and chasten my vain and proud will, and thereby, with God’s help, attain freedom of spirit, and with that, spiritual rejoicing!"-"It is not as a child that I believe and confess Jesus Christ。 My hosanna is born of a furnace of doubt。"-"It's the great mystery of human life that old grief passes gradually into quiet tender joy。"-"The more I detest men individually the more ardent becomes my love for humanity。"-“What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love。”-“I can see the sun, but even if I cannot see the sun, I know that it exists。 And to know that the sun is there – that is living。”-“Night, fresh and quiet, almost unstirring, enveloped the earth。 The white towers and golden domes of the church gleamed in the sapphire sky。 The luxuriant autumn flowers in the flowerbeds near the house had fallen asleep until morning。 The silence of the earth seemed to merge with the silence of the heavens, they mystery of the earth touched the mystery of the stars…Alyosha stood gazing and suddenly, as if he had been cut down, threw himself to the earth。 He did not know why he was embracing it, he did not try to understand why he longed so irresistibly to kiss it, to kiss all of it, but he was kissing it, weeping, sobbing, and watering it with his tears, and he vowed ecstatically to love it, to love it unto ages of ages。”-“And even if we are occupied with most important things, if we attain to honor or fall into great misfortune—still let us remember how good it was once here, when we were all together, united by a good and kind feeling which made us, for the time we were loving that poor boy, better perhaps than we are。” 。。。more

Definitely a book that can be read and re-read many times。 Completely flawless by all accounts except one; bougie Russian pontificating can get REALLY annoying at times (unless that's just how it comes off in English)。Still cannot relate completely to a single character, but probably all the better for it。 Definitely a book that can be read and re-read many times。 Completely flawless by all accounts except one; bougie Russian pontificating can get REALLY annoying at times (unless that's just how it comes off in English)。Still cannot relate completely to a single character, but probably all the better for it。 。。。more

。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was certainly a long ride, but nonetheless worth it til the last page。 Suited if you're searching for a long read on the grey grounds of morality, obscure philosophy and manners of characters, and even if you want to read a classic complex and tangled love story, since Mitya's love story is one of the most passionate I've ever read in a classic, beside Anna Karenina。 This book was certainly a long ride, but nonetheless worth it til the last page。 Suited if you're searching for a long read on the grey grounds of morality, obscure philosophy and manners of characters, and even if you want to read a classic complex and tangled love story, since Mitya's love story is one of the most passionate I've ever read in a classic, beside Anna Karenina。 。。。more

I couldn't bring myself to finish this book even though I had already sunk 200-something pages。 I read Crime and Punishment in high school and enjoyed it, so I hoped I might recapture that with this novel but I was sorely mistaken。 Even though this book is portrayed as being about the murder of a father by his sons, after two hundred pages in the dad was very much still alive and kicking。。。 I found none of the characters likable and all the women were so poorly written and one-dimensional。 Would I couldn't bring myself to finish this book even though I had already sunk 200-something pages。 I read Crime and Punishment in high school and enjoyed it, so I hoped I might recapture that with this novel but I was sorely mistaken。 Even though this book is portrayed as being about the murder of a father by his sons, after two hundred pages in the dad was very much still alive and kicking。。。 I found none of the characters likable and all the women were so poorly written and one-dimensional。 Wouldn't recommend, and I am so glad to have freed myself of it。 。。。more

Complex and immersive。 I enjoyed the exploration of morality from both secular and religious standpoints and how each brother wasn't exactly "good" but was sympathetic。 There were parts that were slower going then others and I think I would have really enjoyed reading this in an English class with lot of discussion--I'm probably gonna go look up some analysis and essays to see what I missed。 Definitely worth my time even though it took me forever to read。 Also, definitely recommend the Audible a Complex and immersive。 I enjoyed the exploration of morality from both secular and religious standpoints and how each brother wasn't exactly "good" but was sympathetic。 There were parts that were slower going then others and I think I would have really enjoyed reading this in an English class with lot of discussion--I'm probably gonna go look up some analysis and essays to see what I missed。 Definitely worth my time even though it took me forever to read。 Also, definitely recommend the Audible audiobook, the reader did a fantastic job at creating emotion and unique personalities in each character and really helped me get through this dense tome。 。。。more

Liked it in parts。 I have already read Crime and Punishment which I felt great。 Even in this book the writers insights into human psych and the way people think are all great but he also delves into spiritual stuff which didn't work for me。 Liked it in parts。 I have already read Crime and Punishment which I felt great。 Even in this book the writers insights into human psych and the way people think are all great but he also delves into spiritual stuff which didn't work for me。 。。。more

。。。more

This was way more philosophical than I thought。 The characters are unlikable on the surface but if read as a work of philosophy it makes more sense。 Not very light reading。 Glad to have read it but won’t read again。 3-3。5 stars。

I’m just blown away。This book is so good, that it makes me want to start reading it all over again。Characters are build up from the ground, so you really get to know each of them, their personalities, way of thinking, …He could easily write a story of each of them and it would be a master piece on its own (he actually wanted to publish a book only about Alyosha Karamazov - unfortunately never managed to do it, since he passed away shortly after publishing Brothers Karamazov。I loved philosophical I’m just blown away。This book is so good, that it makes me want to start reading it all over again。Characters are build up from the ground, so you really get to know each of them, their personalities, way of thinking, …He could easily write a story of each of them and it would be a master piece on its own (he actually wanted to publish a book only about Alyosha Karamazov - unfortunately never managed to do it, since he passed away shortly after publishing Brothers Karamazov。I loved philosophical discussions in all possible forms - through dialogues, through descriptions of characters and through story itself。Part when defender held his final speech on the court was just amazingly written in my opinion - he compared phycology with a stick - a stick always has two sides and so does psychology - you can always look at it from two sides and he took the time to also explain each of Dimitrij’s "evidence" from completely different perspective。It is amazing how Dostoyevsky is able to argue different sides and ideas from each perspective。Each chapter has its own meaning, even though you don't always understand its point when reading it, but later on it just comes together to such beautiful meaning and creates an amazing story。This book is just everything。 。。。more

。。。more
